Should smoking be banned everywhere?

Started by Amy , author of Savings.com Blog - Latest Posts 7/6/2011 10:19:53 AM

Recently, Humana stopped hiring workers who smoked. What do you guys think about the banning of smoking everywhere? Most restaurants and bar have already jumped on the smoking ban bandwagon.

How about in your town? Thoughts on this issue?

I will probably get  some of you mad at me, this is a hot button issue for me, I am not a smoker, my hubby is. I get offended by the whole smoking/non smoking issue, last time I checked we was a free nation, to make all our own choices, good or bad ours to make.

I believe that if, the american public can have control over someones personal choice, just because it may cause health issues, or that they don't like cigarette smoke then we as Americans should, have the right say , some people wear to much cologne, eat to much food becoming over weight, someone who doesn't have great heigene, ETC.

It in my opinion it is a group of do gooders, thinking they have the right to take your rights away from you, because you no better than the smoker, what is right. which in fact isn't true. I am not crazy about cigarette smoke myself, but if I don't want to smell or breathe it in, I move away.

We are a free nation to a point, I believe we need to respect others personal choices, who knows maybe us non-smokers have vise's that offend smokers.

Okay,, I'm a smoker, been smoking since I was about 13. I've tried quitting several times over the past couple of years, and it is really hard to do. I watched both my grandfathers suffer with lung diseases, I know it is a poison.

To those that say we (smokers) are intruding on your space. these days, most work places do not allow you to smoke on their property, not even in your own car. IF we are allowed to smoke on property, it is usually in a designated area, and even then , we have to be so far away from any doors. So, to you, I say, how are we intruding on your air? If your not a smoker, and don't want to be around smoke, don't go to the smoking area.

To those who are trying to tell us how to live our lives, stop it. We all have our vices, mine happens to be smoking, and drinking coffee. Stop the discrimination against smokers!

I can't speak for other smokers, but I am very conscious about where I smoke, and I am considerate of those that do not smoke, even in my own home.

I hate tellling anyone what they can and can't do but I feel that smoking is hazardous to everyone's health.  I know too many people who smoking has negatively impacted.  I've had several friends and relatives die from various smoking related illnesses.  My grandfather died from cancer he got from breathing in second hand smoke constantly.

Unfortunately, when smokers decide to smoke around others they are negatively impacting their lives without their permission.  Especially children.  My mom smokes and I limit my children's exposure to her house because it smells like a big ashtray.  They come home smelling like cigarette butts and she doesn't even smoke heavily.  I'm sorry but I feel it's gross, disgusting and harmful to everyone.  Just my personal opinion.  Please don't crucify me.

Anytime I took a smoke break at work my bosses would kill us if we stood in front of the bldg. I do hate walking into a bldg when smokers stand in front. However my boss also gave breaks to non smokers too.

I have mixed feelings.  I think businesses should have a designated area to allow for smokers.  I am a Former smoker and remember the fuss when all of this first started.  I was resentful toward non-smokers then because they were so worried about their "rights" but didn't care about the smokers' rights to have what they wanted either.  It was definitely one-sided.  Even though I have quit smoking, I still kind of feel that way, but I'm with Red.  I think if they are going to ban something, they ought to do away with it completely, including alcohol.  According to the doctor I am in the early stage of COPD.  I asked him how I got it since I have not smoked in almost 6 years, and he said from "my hubby smoking".  My husband made it quite clear that he wasn't going to quit smoking in his own house, and so I deal with it.  His attitude stems from all of the non-smoking wherever you go, and his mom's house which he has to sit outside to smoke.  Therefore, I think this restriction can  be more of a hindrance than a help.  At least in our case.

Both father and maternal grandfather were smokers. Unfortunately I had been a secondhand smoker for many years. Now I have asthma. Most days I am OK in our area because public places are smoke-free. I have trouble when I travel to countries like Greece and China where almost all men smoke.

To allow smoking in public is almost like forcing others to take poison.

I watched my great grandfather die SLOWLY with emphysema and it was so sad. It left a huge impression on me. Besides that, I also have asthma and cherish every breath of air that I am able to breathe. heart

This makes me so sad.  I can't imagine your husband willingly continuing to smoke in your home with you being diagnosed with COPD.   And please don't blame his pig-headed behavoir on other people.   I hope you can find some clean air to breathe.

We already do! Look at all the laws they have made trying to keep us from hurting ourselves already. Seat belts, helmets for motorcycles, horseback riding, bikes, who knows what else, herbal remedies, etc. More and more to come, you'll see. The only reason smoking is okay is because they are making big bucks from the taxes it generates as well as the business it gives the medical community.

That is definitely NO joke! It not only affects the family members, but their pets as well.
