How do I generate income from my BlogFrog community?

Started by Holly , author of Love and Math | Love, math and everything in between. 4/8/2010 12:28:50 PM

(updated 6.3.10 - this feature is now live!)

A lot of you have asked for more info on how the whole advertising revenue thing works with BlogFrog communities so we wanted to share some details and give you a place to ask questions.

BlogFrog has partnered with ad networks like Federated Media, Technorati, and several other quality ad networks to allow any BlogFrog community to run advertising.  Community owners now have a new option in your Community Settings to enable advertising.  BlogFrog handles all the details with the ad networks so there is nothing you have to do except turn the feature on.

What kind of ads? BlogFrog works closely with advertisers to make sure all ads are tasteful, high quality, and family friendly.  We run top quality ads from leading advertisers like Dreamworks, Wal-Mart, Disney, and hundreds of other leading brands.  These ads are specifically targeted to BlogFrog communities (women, moms and families), however, it is possible that some ads may slip through that are not up to your standards.  We will try to block those in a timely manner.

So how much do you get paid?  When advertising is enabled, BlogFrog pays the community owner a $2.00 CPM which means $2.00 for every 1000 pageviews in your community. For example, if your community had 50,000 pageviews in a month, you would earn $100 that month (50 x $2.00).  You'll be able to see stats on pageviews (since advertising was enabled), how much revenue you have earned, and how much revenue you have been paid by clicking the new "Advertising" link found in your Admin Menu.

This is a high-level description and you can find more details, legal-eze, and payment terms here.

We know the idea of any community being able to generate revenue is a new one, especially for small to medium sized bloggers.  What questions do you have?

What does CPM stand for?  (as in $4 CPM)

I think it means cost per mile. That amount per every 1000 views. Correct me if I'm wrong.

When are the ads available? I see some communities have them already.

Thanks :-)

Hoosier Homemade those communities have been up and running for a while and they get a ton of traffic. (They may or may not have been experimental to see how it would go Holly would have to clarify that) I don't think there is a release date yet for when the ads will be available to everyone.

Hi everyone!

Christine - CPM stands for Cost Per Thousand (I know, the letters don't match up!).  That is the industry acronym (abbreviation) for that phrase in the online ad space. CPM relates to what an advertiser pays for an ad.  For instance, if a brand pays $2.00 CPM that means they paid $2.00 to have 1000 impressions of their ad run in a community.

HoosierHomemade - Brandie is right, we have some large communities testing the ads for us (and have for several months) but we are about to release this capability to everyone.  Probably in the next 3 weeks so stay tuned for an announcement!

Hope that helps!
